How to choose and install a motion sensor floodlight for outdoor use

Special attention is always paid to the lighting of the street areas adjacent to the country house. If a motion-sensor floodlight is used as the illuminator, the user can expand the device's capabilities to a security function. An unexpected inclusion of a spotlight while a foreign object is moving will scare it off with a sharp drop in illumination and inform the owner about the appearance of an unwanted guest.

Scope of application and benefits

A searchlight with a motion sensor provides protection against the entry of unauthorized people into the territory

The considered category of lighting devices are used to protect the territories bordering on the structure, as well as to illuminate access roads and other areas. In addition, such devices are used to service the following places:

  • zones adjacent to neighbors;
  • sites of industrial enterprises;
  • warehouses and parking lots;
  • various commercial properties.

Often they are installed in the area of doorways, which allows, along with lighting, to control the movement of unauthorized persons and significantly expands the scope of application.

Lighting devices of this class are distinguished by increased functionality, small size and ease of maintenance. In addition, they have the following advantages:

  • durability (to a greater extent this applies to LED models);
  • ease of installation;
  • profitability achieved due to the short duration of inclusion;
  • resistance to climatic and other types of influences: vibrations, noise, sudden changes in temperature and precipitation.

The list of advantages can be supplemented by the ability to customize for the given parameters and the admissibility of installation in almost any place where there is a reliable foundation.

Types of spotlights and order of selection

Among the well-known models of floodlights with DD, the following types stand out:

  • appliances working with incandescent bulbs or energy-saving light sources;
  • more efficient halogen spotlights;
  • LED devices designed for a voltage not exceeding 12 volts.

Each of the types of street motion sensor floodlights has its own advantages and disadvantages, which are very important to consider in the selection process. All other things being equal, preference is given to the model that best suits the protected area.

It is customary to use LED floodlights to illuminate the entrances to the garage located on the territory or to the house itself.

In various types of illuminators with sensors, sensitivity adjustment is provided to adapt it to specific operating conditions. After setting it correctly, the devices react only to objects of a certain size. In addition, in some models, temporary adjustments are allowed, which determine the delay in turning off the device after triggering.

To choose a model of a floodlight with a DD that is suitable for outdoor installation, you should adhere to two rules. First of all, you need to decide on the illuminator used in it, on the choice of which the operational reliability of the device depends. Secondly, it is important to familiarize yourself with the parameters of the motion sensor that meet all the requirements for it.

Principle of operation

How the spotlight works

When a constantly moving object is detected in the protected area, the illuminator turns on for a fixed time. After a certain time interval, set by the selected delay, the light turns off until the next sensor is triggered. Then the whole process is repeated in the same order.

The function of the sensors that control the operation of the illuminator is usually performed by IR sensors of the "passive" type. The operation of these devices is based on a change in the temperature background in the event of a person or an animal appearing in the area of the element's sensitivity. After its registration, the sensor generates a control pulse, which ensures that the searchlight lamp is turned on for a specified time.

Installation of spotlights

As a rule, there are no special difficulties with the installation of a floodlight. First, a suitable place is selected where the device can record the slightest movement of foreign objects. It is determined in such a way that the spotlight illuminates as much of the area as possible and ensures its complete overlap.

Some examples of lighting devices allow operation from a backup battery that is connected to the power line in the event of a power outage. In this case, before installation, it is necessary to provide a separate place for it, which must be reliably protected from bad weather.

The ease of installation of the device allows you to perform all operations yourself. You don't even need a tool to do this. The delivery set includes a special bracket by means of which the spotlight is fixed in the chosen place.

Connection and configuration

The order of connecting the device to the network depends on the configuration, which differs for individual models. There are two performances. In the first case, the sensor and the illuminator are located in a single housing and are electrically connected to each other. Their connection to the mains will be standard, through the supplied block. In another version, they are supplied separately and require additional wiring. In this case, the following options for their connection to the mains are possible:

  • direct inclusion through DD;
  • installation of an auxiliary switch mounted in parallel to it;
  • connection through the built-in sensor of several projectors;
  • switching on an illuminator with several sensors.

With a direct connection, the lighting turns on when a person appears in the protected area - without triggering the DD, the light does not light up. The second case is more universal and allows two options for the user's choice. He can operate the device in automatic mode (the switch is not activated) or turn on the lighting manually. In this case, the key device works simultaneously with the sensor, so that the switching is carried out either in one way or another.

A pair of floodlights are mounted in parallel, which not only increases their total power in watts (W), but also increases the overall illumination of the controlled space. In the latter situation, several sensors are connected in parallel at the discretion of the owner, expanding the sensitivity zone.

Adjustment of a spotlight with a sensor is carried out in accordance with the instructions attached to it. It consists of two stages: choosing the direction of radiation of the lighting device and adjusting the sensor. The required position of the illuminator is set by the control knobs located on the brackets, and the sensitivity of the sensor is set by means of special adjusting elements on its body.

When setting the level of illumination of the sensor triggering in open areas, it is adjusted to a minimum. In case of insufficient lighting, the exact value of this indicator is selected experimentally, after which it is adjusted depending on the circumstances.
