How to break down fat in a sump

Despite the many modern types of sewage systems, some still prefer storage systems. Their main drawback is the need to periodically empty the cesspool. Over time, this has to be done more and more often, because fat accumulates on the walls of the pit. How can I prevent this on my own?

Why does fat accumulate in the pit

The cesspool is the end point of all sewer pipes. Water along with waste comes here from the bathroom, shower, bath, toilet and kitchen sink, respectively, almost anything can end up in the pit.

The main source of fatty plaque in the drain is the kitchen pipe. Through it comes fat from dirty dishes, the remains of broth, solid food particles, which become a source of traffic jams, stagnation, interfering with the unhindered movement of water through the pipes.

Cool water slows down the movement of fat, which causes it to stick to the walls of the pipeline. This is especially true for cast iron pipes, which have a rough surface. A sticky layer forms, which attracts solid particles and waste, and the lumen of the pipe becomes smaller due to these build-ups - this is called a fat plug.

Ideally, a person should anticipate this problem in advance and periodically carry out preventive cleaning. If this measure is ignored, sooner or later water disposal will be disrupted: bacteria multiply, an unpleasant odor appears, water leaves slowly, and blockages form.

For the prevention and elimination of fatty plugs, special means are used.

Chemical and biological agents

It is possible to eliminate fat deposits both with improvised means that are in every home, and highly specialized ones, specially designed for cleaning cesspools and pipelines.

Dr. Robick 309

"Dr. Robik 309" refers to professional septic tank care products. This is a biological product that acts due to natural microorganisms contained in the composition. It dissolves fats, organic matter, and eliminates unpleasant odors.

The tool is available in liquid form in a small volume, but if you use it at regular intervals for prophylaxis, you can avoid silting and the formation of a fat plug.

The standard bottle is emptied into the toilet or cesspool once a year, or more often if the hole fills up too quickly. Beforehand, the liquid must be shaken. After use, with properly organized sewerage and the observance of preventive measures, re-treatment will be required only after a year.

It is advisable to use "Doctor Robik 309" before it will be possible to reduce water consumption in the house (for example, no one will spend the night here in the next day). Then the effectiveness of using the drug will be higher.

The cost of a bottle is from 750 rubles.

There are also more powerful tools from the same line ("Doctor Robik" 409, 509, 609, 809), which are more expensive.

Septifos Vigor

Biological activator Septifos Vigor (Poland) is presented in the form of a gray mineral powder containing special bacteria. A package weighing 1.2 kg is enough, according to the manufacturer, for 7 months of regular use. The box contains a measuring spoon for convenience.

The tool is used for prophylaxis, removes unpleasant odors, reduces the amount of the contents of cesspools in a short time. The usage algorithm is as follows:

Calculate the required dose of the drug (25 g for each 1 m3).
Pour the product into the toilet every 10 days using a measuring spoon.
The first time you use it, you need to fall asleep a double dose.

If the powder is used constantly, you can not resort to the services of a sewer until 10-15 years. The cost of one package is about 900 rubles.

Roetech K-87

Roetech K-87 is the brainchild of the renowned manufacturer Roebic Laboratories, inc. The product is an active solvent for soap, grease, paper, solid waste based on the activity of anaerobic bacteria. It belongs to biological, therefore, it is completely safe for people, animals and the environment.

Mode of application:

  • Shake the bottle.
  • Pour the contents into the toilet closest to the pit at the rate of 1 bottle (946 ml) per 2 m3.
  • After 12-24 hours, rinse the drain with hot water.

Re-treatment will only be needed after a year, if the pit is too quickly filled, you can repeat the procedure earlier.

The cost of one bottle is from 750 rubles.

Waste Treat

Waste Treat is a biological product that contains 6 types of anaerobic microorganisms. It is designed for cleaning cesspools, drainage systems, outdoor toilets and septic tanks. Also "Waste Treat" neutralizes unpleasant odors.

The product is available in the form of tablets, granules and liquid. The price ranges from 510 rubles.

You can choose any form of the product, taking into account your preferences, but pills have taken root best of all. They do not need to be diluted in water: just place one tablet in a sump and enjoy the result. A second procedure will be required only after 3 months.

The granules and liquid must first be diluted in water and flushed into the toilet closest to the drain, having previously calculated the volume. The tool is used very sparingly. Another advantage is its resistance to chlorine.

Summer and winter

An affordable, inexpensive product from a Russian manufacturer is designed to cleanse septic tanks and rings, remove grease from pipes and soil, and, as the name implies, works all year round. Biological agents based on the activity of bacteria are active only at positive temperatures (from +5 degrees), the rest of the time they do not work.

"Summer and winter" is also resistant to chlorine and other compounds, eliminates unpleasant odors in 15 minutes. It reduces the frequency of calling the sewer truck up to 2-5 times.

Wear rubber gloves before use. The product is added to the lower tank at the rate of 20 ml per 10 liters of water.

The cost of 1 liter of funds is only 300-400 rubles.

What to do if all else fails

The first sign of grease accumulation in the sump is the appearance of an unpleasant odor. Usually, the solution to the problem begins with calling a sewer, then biological substances are used and, if they turned out to be ineffective, they turn to chemicals. If after this the smell does not disappear, the pit has to be cleaned more and more often, which means that we are talking about silting up, and a thorough mechanical cleaning will be required.

The work algorithm is as follows:

  1. Remove all waste with the help of a sewer service.
  2. Using a hose, apply a strong pressure of water into the empty pit, trying to break up the silty sediment. If the pit is heavily filled, you need to pump out the water with a pump or a suction pump and repeat the procedure.
  3. Use any chemical cleaner as instructed and clean the pit again with a pump or suction pump.

If the sump has no bottom, the sand and gravel filter needs to be cleaned or renewed. It is better, of course, to completely remove the contents and replace them with a new one: a layer of sand, a layer of rubble or gravel 40 cm thick.

When carrying out mechanical cleaning, it is imperative to use a special suit, rubber gloves and a respirator. The best time for manipulation is late spring.

For another cleaning method, you will need a rope. You need to put on a special rounded ruff on it and start moving it through the collector to the septic tank itself. In this case, the work is carried out by two people: one turns the cable, the other pulls it forward. If it starts to move more difficult, you need to make forward and backward movements to break the fat plug.

Finally, the pipes are rinsed with plenty of hot water.

Prevention of fat accumulation

To prevent grease from accumulating in the entire sewer system, the pipes should be cleaned in a timely manner (for example, filled with regular baking soda and rinsed with hot water) every 2-3 months.

It is worth installing special metal or plastic nets on all drain holes of baths, showers and sinks, which will not allow large food residues to pass through.

You can also install a special device - a grease trap, which allows you to remove fat from the water before it enters the pit. The grease trap also cleans food and other debris from wastewater, extending the life of the sewer system.
