The device of the sewerage system is impossible without the use of fittings and other auxiliary elements. They allow you to change the configuration of the collector in a given direction. For private construction, polypropylene sewer bends with an angle of rotation of 45 degrees or PVC elements are mainly used. They are easy to use and, due to the excellent smoothness of the inner walls, provide an optimal flow rate of sewage.
Definition and purpose of the sewer outlet
A manifold bend is a pipe element bent at a certain angle. The second name of the fitting is a corner, a knee. The main function of the product is to change the direction of the sewer flow towards the central riser or septic tank from the entrance from the wall of the house and in other parts of it. As a rule, the branch has the same cross-section as the sewer pipe.
Plugs and tees are used as additional fittings for the sewage system. The first helps to restrict the movement of water flow. The second allows you to branch the collector if the system is laid for two or three buildings at the same time, or storm and fecal waste from two different systems will flow into a common receiver.
Manufacturing material
Fittings made of the following materials are presented on the market:
- Steel. In everyday life, when installing sewage systems, it is extremely rarely used. This is due to the tendency of the metal to corrosion and the complexity of installation work. For the device of the steel channel, welding must be used. During the operation, a thin layer of coating of steel pipes is disturbed, which leads to their more rapid wear. Galvanized metal is used to extend the life of the steel collector.
- Cast iron. Durable material with an impressive weight. Working with cast iron is just as inconvenient as working with steel. The installation of the pipeline is carried out using electric-welded equipment, soldering or other labor-intensive methods. The molded cast iron elements are not equipped with seals. Metal is prone to corrosion, especially when installing the outer part of the sewer. A sludge build-up quickly forms on the inner walls of the cast-iron outlet.
- Ceramics. Such a drainage channel is characterized by a long service life, high flow rate due to smooth inner walls and ease of installation. However, the cost, like the weight of the ceramic tap, is high for a private craftsman.
- Low pressure polyethylene (HDPE). Shaped elements are black and are used only for outdoor sewerage. In private construction, HDPE is not used. Its main purpose is the device of industrial and central city highways. Installation of polyethylene tubes is carried out by soldering or using special couplings. Low pressure polyethylene is inert to aggressive inclusions and does not react to temperature extremes.
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The optimal drainage material for private construction. Installation of all PVC sewerage elements takes place in the socket. This greatly facilitates the construction process. For internal work, gray bends are used, for external ones - brown. PVC is not afraid of aggressive media and has low thermal conductivity. The outer part of the sewer is less likely to freeze in the ground than a cast iron or steel network.
- Polypropylene.Taps made of this material are suitable for installation inside a building, since the PP is afraid of ultraviolet radiation. Fittings are equipped with sockets for simplified installation. Liquid up to 95 degrees can be passed through polypropylene pipes. The material is not afraid of this.
There are no bends for asbestos-cement pipes, therefore, metal sewer half-bends are used in such a pipeline.
When constructing a manifold, it is important to use all elements from the same material. If it is necessary to combine several diverse parts, special adapters are used. Most often these are bends for corrugated pipes.
Without exception, all shaped elements are manufactured strictly in accordance with GOST. Otherwise, the process of installation and further operation of the system will cause difficulties.
Types of bends
In addition to the classification of bends according to the material of manufacture, they are divided into types according to the degree of the bend angle. You can purchase drainage elements 15, 30, 45, 67 and 87 degrees. At the same time, bends with any bend can be joined together, but it is not recommended to make too sharp turns of the collector. In such areas, blockages are more common.
In addition to the bending angle, bends are divided into single-socket and double-socket.
Both types change the direction of the liquid (air, gas) in the system, but differ in the complexity of installation. A single-socket bend has, as a rule, a smaller bend angle.
Parameters, dimensions, weight
For the device of the sewer collector, you can purchase bends of any diameter. The table shows the common parameters of fittings.
Diameter (mm) | Length (mm) | Weight (kg) depending on the material of manufacture |
15 | 28 | 0,04 |
20 | 29 | 0,06 |

Selection recommendations
The shaped element for the sewage system is chosen according to the following criteria:
- Manufacturing material. It is desirable that it fully coincide with the type of pipes used for laying the manifold.
- Internal section of products. It must correspond to the diameter of the pipes: if the collector has a cross section of 110 mm, the outlet for sewer pipes is taken with a diameter of 110 mm, no more and no less.
- The presence of rubber seals. They greatly facilitate the process of installing the sewerage system.
- Compliance of products with GOST. As a rule, there is a corresponding marking on the outside of the product.
- Bending angle. It is important to correctly calculate the configuration of the line in order to avoid errors in the device of its direction.
- The presence of a flat smooth inner surface of the product. Otherwise, in the future, wastewater with large inclusions will provoke the formation of build-ups on the walls of the collector.
As a rule, when installing a household sewage system in a private house or apartment, plastic fittings are used.
Installation rules
The elbow installation technique consists of several stages.
- Cut the pipe in the place where the branch will be attached to it. It is important to ensure that the retraction is made strictly perpendicular to the central axis. Otherwise, the section of the tube will not fit into the bend of the outlet tightly and to the stop along the entire circumference.
- The cut edge from the inner and outer sides of the pipe is cleaned with emery from burrs. This is important because if they are present, blockages of fibrous deposits will form in the pipe, which can cling to irregularities. Then a small chamfer is made along the outer edge with an angle of 15 degrees.
- On the outer edge of the bend, a groove is also formed with the same angle in order to subsequently insert the edge of the element into the next pipe.
The edges of the collector parts are treated with a sealant and are joined together in the direction of the pipeline. When connecting to the socket, a small expansion gap of 10 mm must be left. It is not recommended to deepen parts of the collector beyond this mark.
Sealing joints
During the installation of the bends, you must also monitor the high-quality sealing of all joints, otherwise the collector will leak. In most cases, all plastic elements are already equipped with rubber seals. They are located inside the socket. If not, the rubber ring is inserted all the way before joining the knee to the tube.
Special plumbing sealants help to enhance the sealing effect. They are pre-applied to the rubber seal around the entire circumference. When choosing a sealant, it is better to give preference to neutral than acidic. The former are more reliable, although they are more expensive. It is forbidden to use acidic compounds when installing cast iron or steel collectors. Otherwise, the acid will corrode the metal.
