Unpleasant odors that appear in the toilet quickly spread throughout the apartment or house, reducing comfortable living conditions. It will not be possible to fight this nuisance with air fresheners and airing. It is necessary to look for reasons to permanently eliminate the unpleasant odor from the sewer in the toilet.
Causes of unpleasant odors
There are two main reasons for the stench. By eliminating them, you can solve the problem:
- The drain of the plumbing fixture installed in the toilet room is clogged.
- The plumbing fixture was installed with violations of the installation process.
But there are other factors that affect the efficient operation of plumbing fixtures. The first is the lack of water in the siphon. This water barrier protects against odors from entering the sewer pipe. If, for some reason, there is no water in the water seal, it is necessary to fix it. This usually happens if the plumbing fixture has not been used for a long time. The water inside the siphon just dries up.
Another reason is the incorrect installation of the water seal. Two options should be considered here: installation of a corrugated and bottle siphon.
In the first case, the corrugation was incorrectly formed. It was pulled out without creating a knee in which a water plug is formed. The fix for this error is simple. It is necessary to bend the corrugated hose so that an elbow is formed with a bend towards the floor.
In the second case, the error is an incorrectly installed outlet pipe entering the sewer pipe. If it is vertically located above the siphon chamber (bottle), polluted air and gases from the sewer will begin to move over the water plug. The problem is solved just as easily. It is necessary to lower the outlet pipe below the bottle compartment of the water seal by 2-3 cm.
The third reason is the clogging of the siphon. Deposits will begin to settle on the walls of the appliance, decompose and give off unpleasant odors. This rarely happens with sinks, but if such a nuisance occurs, the water seal must be dismantled, disassembled and cleaned, and then the device must be installed in the reverse order. You can not disassemble the devices, but use household chemicals to clean the sewer system. The main thing is to choose the right drug.
If the sewer system is assembled from plastic elements, then you should not pour chemicals with a high acid content into it. The latter will simply eat away at the plastic.
The fifth reason is a violation of the tightness of the joints of the sewer network. This is the most flagrant violation of the editing process. In this case, a depressurized joint is difficult to detect. Especially if it is located in a hard-to-reach place. Through such a joint, sewage begins to drip, and this place exudes an unpleasant odor.

The second reason is a loose connection between the toilet bowl and the sewer pipe. The elbow is preferable because the inner plane of the corrugated pipe is ribs with voids between them. Although it is easier to install the corrugation, it is better to install a plastic pipe elbow. To do this, you need to accurately adjust the installation site of the toilet to the sewer main. The smaller the distance between the plumbing fixture and the pipe, the better.
If the toilet has not been used for a long time, the water inside the siphon dries up. The passage opens and unpleasant odors from the sewer are transferred directly to the toilet.
Preventive measures
It is necessary to periodically carry out preventive maintenance of plumbing fixtures:
- constantly monitor the cleanliness of the toilet and sink;
- periodically examine the joints of the sewer system for leaks;
- entrust the installation of sewerage and plumbing devices to professionals;
- minor repairs can be done by hand, but it is better to trust the specialists for complex breakdowns;
- use flavors: air, gel, tablets for toilet cisterns, etc.
