Installing a bathroom door is an event that needs to be approached competently and thoughtfully. The room has its own specifics and a number of features that must be taken into account: high humidity, high traffic, risk of leaks, width and congestion of the corridor with furniture. The work is quite difficult, but with the right approach it can be done by hand.
A selection of doors to the bathroom by materials
When planning to replace the entrance group in the bathroom, you should not make a mistake in choosing the material for the canvas. It must have qualities such as water resistance, sound insulation, strength and durability.
There are the following options:
- Plastic. As a rule, budget PVC is used for manufacturing. The design is not afraid of water, lightweight and easy to maintain. However, it does not look catchy and will not be able to decorate the apartment.
- Wood. The canvas looks expensive and representative, but its price is impressive. The downside is that the wood rots and collapses under the influence of moisture. The way out is in the processing of the canvas with high-quality impregnations, varnishes and the installation of effective ventilation.
- Glass. The hardened and multi-layer structures have a very presentable appearance, are immune to dampness, practically do not wear out, and are resistant to impacts. The only question is the financial capabilities of the owners.
- Chipboard. The door trimmed with veneer and laminate looks impressive at an affordable cost. But it will not last long, since it swells and deforms from moisture.
A good solution is to use metal-plastic frames with a glass unit. Such structures comply with all the rules for the operation of wet rooms at a very reasonable price.
Choice of door design
The next criterion for preparing for the repair is the choice of the design of the door system. Here, too, you need to take into account the features of the layout of the apartment, the size of the bathroom and the priorities of the residents.
- Swinging with one leaf. This is the most common solution, simple to implement and providing good sound insulation.
- Swing doors with two shutter-type doors. Installed in order to save free space if there is not enough space for one large canvas. They can open outward or inward.
- Sliding open. They look impressive and practically do not take up space when opened. The downside is that there are cracks through which noise penetrates into the corridor and rooms, which can be quite strong when a hair dryer and a washing machine are running.
- Sliding hidden. Quite an expensive design, involving the installation of a box, which is later disguised as the decoration of the room.
When analyzing various models, one should pay attention to such a structural element as a window. Its presence will improve the illumination of the bathroom. The window can be matte, transparent, with or without curtains.
The presence or absence of a threshold
When planning repairs, attention should be paid to the threshold. It should be considered from the aesthetic and practical points of view. This element is part of the structure of the jamb and bears the function of protection against possible flooding of the corridor, rooms located below the apartments in a multi-storey building.Based on this, it is advisable to install a door with a threshold to the bathroom, protecting yourself from potential troubles and additional costs.
You can make a threshold from the following materials:
- stainless steel;
- bronze;
- solid wood
- brass;
- aluminum;
- plastic;
- tiled concrete.
The height of the nut varies within 2-5 cm. It is not worth doing above, as people will stumble over it. There must be an air supply to the bathroom to provide the room with effective ventilation. If overflow grids are not provided, set the bar so that there is a gap of 2-4 mm between it and the canvas.
Required tools and materials
To put the door to the bathroom with your own hands, it is enough to have a set of accessories that are in the closet of almost every property owner. The kit is needed quite impressive, since the process consists of dismantling and installation.
To work, you will need the following tools:
- grinder, puncher, screwdriver;
- level, tape measure, square, marker;
- hacksaw;
- mount;
- chisel, chisel;
- miter box;
- a hammer.
From the materials you need to purchase:
- polyurethane foam;
- dowels;
- nails;
- a board for making spacer wedges;
- self-tapping screws;
- silicone;
- primer, varnish and paint for chipboard and wood.
In order not to get injured when performing various kinds of manipulations, they must be performed with protective glasses and gloves. It is recommended to use a respirator when working with a hammer drill.
Do-it-yourself bathroom door installation
It is better to make repairs in the bathroom and install a new door during the absence of the other tenants, so as not to create mutual inconveniences.
The door replacement process consists of the following steps:
- Dismantling. The canvas is removed from the hinges and taken out of the apartment. One of the vertical posts of the jamb is sawn in half and its successive extraction from the wall is carried out. Part of the structure should be left for making wedges and spacers.
- A control measurement of the opening is performed and a new loot is made for it. She gathers on the floor around the door. The dimensions are adjusted so that there are gaps of 2-3 mm on all sides.
- The assembled jamb is inserted into the opening, secured with wedges, aligned vertically and horizontally. Then it is screwed to the wall with self-tapping screws or anchors. After re-alignment, the hardware is tightened.
- Filling cracks with polyurethane foam. First, this is done on one side, and after two hours on the other side. Beforehand, 2-3 spacers must be inserted into the jamb so that it does not bend inward under the pressure of the foam.
- Waiting for a day. After that, you need to check the strength of the fastening and add two more anchors on each side of the frame.
- Installation of hinges on the jamb. Depending on the severity of the web, 2 or 3 loops are involved. The upper and lower ones are attached at a distance of 25 cm, the middle one - 50-60 cm from the top.
- Arrangement of the canvas with loops. The door is inserted into the opening and a hinge mark is made on it. Then recesses are made and the part is inserted into them. The metal is oiled, the door is hung up, checked, and its opening is adjusted. Washers are put on the pins if necessary.
- Installing the lock. The best option for its location is 85–90 cm from the floor. First, a groove and holes for handles are made in the canvas. After fixing the product in the door, a groove is made in the jamb and a striker is installed. Finally, decorative overlays are screwed on. The correctness of the closing mechanism is checked.
All that remains is to remove the trash and present the result of your labor to your loved ones.
