Features and disadvantages of a brick barbecue
The efficiency of building a brick barbecue with your own hands is due to the availability of material that can be bought in a store or use old leftovers. In addition, flat surfaces are easily laid out from it, creating a solid support for the brazier. In operation, the brick is undemanding.
The advantages of the material also include:
- versatility in cooking;
- possibility of equipping with a large stove;
- uniformity of heat distribution;
- complex structures are equipped with a smoke collector;
- long service life;
- no specific care required.
The main disadvantage of a brick building is outdoor installation, which makes it difficult to cook in the rain or snow. However, the problem is solved by organizing a canopy over the stove.
The construction of a barbecue made of bricks
Despite the variety of models, brick braziers combine the main elements. Any brazier contains the following elements:
- Foundation. We are not always talking about a capital foundation - it is enough to allocate a site and fill the ground with rubble. Concreting is carried out taking into account the climatic zone and the financial capabilities of the owner.
- Retaining walls. In a simple version, the barbecue is built in the shape of the letter "P" - the back and two side surfaces on which the brazier rests. They do not block the possibility of storing food and at the same time give the structure strength.
- Lattice. This element can also be solid, like a slab, with a pallet at the bottom. Such a device is convenient, since it collects ash, which is easily removed.
- Cutting table. In the process of cooking meat, marinades and sauces are often used, and kebabs are prepared in portions. Therefore, it will be inconvenient for the owner to cook without a countertop.
When choosing a brick for the construction of a barbecue, check its quality. If, when struck with a hammer, it emits a dull sound, this indicates a low grade of raw material.
How to choose a location
The location of the barbecue in the country should be convenient and safe both for the owner of the site and for the neighboring yard. Often, the area around the brazier is covered with sand, pebbles or concreted. As a decor, a path is laid to the zone.
When placing the complex, follow the fire safety rules:
- open space;
- indentation from tree plantations and buildings - at least 5 m;
- storage of combustible materials nearby is prohibited;
- equipping the site with a non-combustible coating.
To make cooking and resting comfortable, consider the wind rose prevailing in the area. Position the brazier downwind. Otherwise, the smoke and smell of cooking food will penetrate into the apartment building.However, if you install the grill too far, for example, from a summer kitchen, you will often have to run into it for various little things. Therefore, choose the middle ground, taking into account the criteria of convenience and safety.
What materials are better to use
The construction of a barbecue begins with the selection of the right materials. For this, the compliance of raw materials with standards is taken into account - strength, heat resistance and more. It is recommended to choose bricks with the marking “produced in accordance with GOST 8691-73”.
Brick
Not every brand of brick is suitable for the construction of a brazier. It is noteworthy that raw materials with specific properties are used for individual structural elements. It is recommended to choose - red for stoves, ordinary corpulent and chamotte. The latter type is characterized by low thermal conductivity, high strength and resistance to decomposition products. Ultimate fire resistance reaches 1800 ° C.
The brazier cannot be built from silicate and quartz bricks, since these materials quickly collapse under the influence of temperature.
Types of solutions
At the first stage of construction, a classic mortar is used, prepared in proportions of 1: 3 from cement and sand. It is necessary to lay out a solid brick, a basement, external walls and a roofing section with a pipe on it.
The following types of mortars are also used in masonry:
- Fireclay - at the time of purchase of clay, check the expiration date and compliance with storage conditions. It is forbidden to keep raw materials in a room with a high level of humidity. Otherwise, there is a risk of destruction of the structure when the temperature in the furnace reaches 1800 ° C. Quality materials make it possible to prepare a plate and durable solution.
- Clay-sandy - has an average temperature resistance of 400 ° C. Unlike cement mortar, this type is environmentally friendly. The prepared raw materials have an unlimited shelf life. Evaporation of moisture is neutralized by the addition of water.
- Cement - used in areas with strong heating. Not recommended for laying the inner part of the furnace.
To prepare the solution, you need a bucket or other container. Use a spirit level and rope to level the surface.
Self-construction technology
To build a brick barbecue with your own hands, you need to prepare for a large number of procedures. Each stage is endowed with small nuances, which together will give the expected result. In view of this, draw up a drawing of the future structure before construction.
Formation of the foundation
The stationary structure is erected on a concrete base. The dimensions of the deepening are 80 cm. The general dimensions of the foundation are 1200 x 950 cm, with indents of 10 cm around the perimeter. First of all, you need to fold the sand pillow and lay the rubble in the base. Further, a reinforcing mesh with a section of No. 14 or higher is being prepared - two rows with a step of 15 cm. The foundation is poured with concrete M500. The section of the slab located above ground level is covered with waterproofing.
Sketches and ordering
Street stationary grill - a device for cooking food on open coals. The prepared brick structure schemes will help you build a stove with your own hands and avoid mistakes. Erection takes a little time and requires a small amount of materials.
The presented instruction for ordering bricks significantly saves time:
- When forming the first row, take into account the thickness of the seam - for red brick 5 mm, fireclay, with which you will begin to lay 11 row - 3 mm.
- Row number 5 involves the installation of corners for subsequent hanging of shelves. Cut the bricks of the next row into the front corner by 100%, the rest by 50%. At the same time, cut the material. Front fragments - one inner with an indent from the facade of 4 cm, outer - to the depth of the corner.Internal elements - undercut along the edges with a groove width of 1 cm, which must be filled with clay. Place bricks on the corners without clay.
- Row 9 are the corners and support for the combustion chamber.
- From the 11th row, the use of fireclay bricks begins with laying on the end.
- Row number 13, install the fireclay brick on one side. Insulate the outer masonry with basalt cardboard. Use heat resistant mastic for adhesion. Glue the material to the inner elements. Lay out the fragments of the furnace first, and then the fireclay bricks. This is due to the different thermal characteristics of this raw material.
- The portal for the barbecue, as a rule, is chosen of an arched type, however, you can think of a rectangular option. To do this, make a beam of fireclay bricks of the "tooth" type. The circuit is detailed in row 22.
- Arch installation - cut the fireclay bricks according to the sketch. Form a template and spread the material on a straight surface. Make undercuts if necessary. Install the arch with gentle movements, avoiding distortions and blockages.
Within 2-3 days after laying the arch, nothing can be done near the structure. It is also not recommended to touch the portal until the solution has completely polymerized.
After the indicated time, proceed to the final stage:
- Row 20 - trim the fireclay and red bricks to fit the arch.
- Row number 22 - the formation of a mangal tooth. Partial overlapping of the firebox in the upper part requires the manufacture of a beam. Fold the device so that it completely overlaps the fireclay brickwork.
- For these works, you will need to make measurements, for example, 75.5 cm, which should be divided by 6.6, where 6.5 cm are the parameters of the brick + seam. As a result, we get 11 bricks (rounded). Soak the material in water, then make markings on all to create holes into which the pins will be inserted. Install the dried elements on a hairpin, treating with mastic. Secure with nuts and washers. Do not overtighten.
- Row number 23 - installation of a smoke collector hood. Prepare the design in advance. After installation, cover the fragment with basalt cardboard, cut into strips 1 cm thick. Coat the corners with mastic.
On the next row, the final fixation of the smoke collector takes place, which forms a small protrusion. Perform further work with a narrowing in the shape of the cap.
Creating a firebox
The layout of the firebox with partitions is formed from two rows. Refractory materials are used for the inner walls. Finishing bricks are only suitable for the outside. The standard parameters are 60 x 70 cm.The firebox of a rectangular opening is laid out in 9 rows, an arched one - 7.
Additionally, the top chamber is completed in two rows, then their number is reduced as the chimney is formed. The side partitions are reduced by ¼ bricks in each row, the back and front partitions - by 50%. Continue to do this for seven rows.
The final stage is the formation of the chimney. It is not recommended to bring the pipe on the roof of the barbecue too high. Enough 12 rows.
Upon completion of construction, the structure should stand for 2-3 days. After that, it is allowed to start finishing and arranging the barbecue.
Barbecue accessories
The construction of a barbecue area made of bricks on a garden plot becomes an attraction for all family members. The furnace is erected as an independent structure or as part of a complex. In the latter version, the functions are combined at the discretion of the owner of the cottage. It is recommended that these elements are initially included in the project.
Cutting table
The presence of a cutting table near the barbecue is a pleasant bonus for those owners who plan to relax and cook in comfort. A homemade design is created according to the following algorithm:
- Extend the back wall. However, if a ligation has been made with the B-pillar, then it will be difficult to do this job.
- An additional structural element is the side wall.It is formed close to the masonry of the combustion chamber.
- After creating the rack, install the countertop. Refractory materials must be used as materials. Do not use metal as there is a risk of burns due to excessive heat. The best option is artificial or natural stone.
Arrangement of the barbecue with a cutting table can be done from any convenient side. The source of fire and the landscape of the site act as a reference point.
Plate
In addition to cooking meat on a wire rack or skewers, the hostess needs to create other dishes. Different kitchen utensils are used in everyday life. In view of this, it is rational to plan a place for a stove in the barbecue complex.
Brazier masonry step by step:
- lengthen the structure in the bottom row;
- make additional laying with bricks along a new contour;
- install the door for the combustion chamber on the front wall;
- Equip the hob with cast iron rings to adjust the power.
Making your own stove for cooking is not difficult. The panel can also be purchased in the store and installed as a ready-made structure.
Washing
The arrangement of a sink near the barbecue is carried out by analogy with the installation of a countertop. The only difference is the need to create a slot for the sink installation. Water supply is formed by supplying a water pipe or installing a washstand. It is noteworthy that the wiring must be done higher than on the site. This is due to the fact that the liquid for the winter must be drained and preserved in the system.
