Brick gate posts are the most popular when building a fence with your own hands. The material has a varied texture. Correctly erected foundation and masonry process will ensure reliability of the structure.
Brick pillar device and material features
Brick gate posts act as a design element. The power load is carried by the metal core, which is the basis of the structure. Its role can be a profile square pipe, a round water pipe or drill pipe, as well as a reinforced concrete structure.
You need to fix the brick pillar by deepening the reinforcement into the ground. Without this rule, the structure will fall.
Brick gates must be reliable. An important role is played by the attractiveness of the appearance. There is a wide range of materials on the modern market.
The following types are produced:
- silicate;
- ceramic;
- clinker;
- hyper-pressed.
The first type is based on quartz sand. The second uses clay. These are versatile options with a high level of moisture resistance.
An important indicator is resistance to low temperatures. In this case, the priority material is silicate brick.
The clinker type has the highest strength factor. It is made on the basis of refractory clay, which is subjected to high-temperature firing. Excellent technical performance is complemented by a variety of shades. The material can last for about 100 years.
The hyper-pressed lightweight version is produced by high pressure processing, as a result of which the particles are combined at the molecular level. The material is durable.
Preparation for work
The first step in the construction of pillars is to determine their number. Typically, the distance between structures should be 3 meters. But if the length of the section is 150-200 meters, the indicator should be 4 meters.
To make a brick pillar, the master will need:
- bayonet shovel;
- container for concrete solution;
- galvanized buckets for gravel and crushed stone;
- spatulas and trowel;
- Boer;
- reinforcing bars;
- scaffolding for laying bricks at a height;
- fabric gloves;
- plumb line;
- building level;
- lace;
- concrete mixer.
You will also need a pickaxe hammer. With the help of the tool, the brick is given the desired size. For a more accurate fit of the elements, they often resort to using a grinder.
Installation of the foundation for the gate
The most common type is the strip and columnar foundation. For its preparation, after marking the ground around the perimeter, a trench 30 cm deep and 40 cm wide is pulled out.In the places of the pillars, depressions are made of 90 cm.The total depth of the pit for the support is 120 cm.This will serve to protect the foundation from freezing the soil and prevent the destruction and displacement of the pillar.
Trenching can be done manually or by technical means. Experienced professionals recommend the first option. Such work will be carried out with greater accuracy, but it will take 2 times more time.
The trench is reinforced with metal rods with a diameter of 14-18 mm.They help to strengthen the brick pillars and compensate for soil subsidence. In place of the pillars, metal or pipe profiles are installed.
The first stage of pouring the foundation begins with a deepening under the pillars. The vertical position of the pipes is controlled by means of the building level, after which the entire tape is poured.
Bricklaying and installation of mortgage gates
As a rule, the pillars are laid out in 1.5 or 2 bricks with a section indicator of 380X380 mm or 510X510 mm. The height of the building is up to 3 meters. The laying is carried out with the displacement of the joints of the lower row, which is overlapped by the upper row of bricks. The seam is standard - 8-10 mm.
The basis of mortgages for sliding gates in brick pillars is a channel. A frame made of reinforcement is welded to it.
Installation involves the following steps:
- cutting off a channel of a given length;
- cutting off profile racks;
- perpendicular welding to the support of the profile pipe elements;
- strapping with a mortgage frame made of metal rods;
- checking the strength of the structure.
The mortgage is an important element. Installation involves strict adherence to dimensions and levels.
Typical mistakes
Mistakes are usually made when attaching gates to brick supports. Embedded frames are welded to a metal post to reinforce the gate. But these details should include only two pillars, on the rest they are not required.
The gates will not have a high degree of reliability, since they will not be held by small sections of bricks, from which a metal rod sticks out. To install the structure, it is necessary to carry out a preliminary layout, mark those pillars that serve as a support.
Installation is carried out by electric welding. It prevents metal build-up.
Installation of gates and wickets
After installing the supports in the ground, pouring concrete, welding the mortgages and lining the pillars with bricks, it is necessary to start hanging the gate. Pre-welding of the hinges to the posts is required. You cannot attach parts to mortgages. They must be welded to the channel sections. The door load is unevenly distributed between the hinges when unlocking. More pressure is exerted on one element than on the other. With prolonged use, this will provoke bending of the metal and skewing of the canvas. A hinge welded to the bracket will provide a more even load. The welding sequence depends on the type of parts. Work with direct configuration is considered.
The process involves the following steps:
- The channel is welded with mortgages.
- The points of attachment of the hinges are marked.
- The upper halves of the parts are welded to the gate lying on the ground.
- The lower parts of the hinges are stuck to the posts in the marked area.
- The gate is lifted and put on hinges. You cannot lower them to the end.
- The hinges are seized in several more places. Supports are installed under the gate.
- Parts are welded into place as the seam is welded from top to bottom.
- After the loops have cooled, the seam is placed one more time on the other side.
- The seams are cleaned with a grinder.
At the welding stage, check how easily the web opens and closes, whether there are distortions. The hinges are not welded suspended.
