Gazebos in the country are usually built of wood. The wood is easy to handle, looks great, but due to the peculiarities of its structure, it needs regular external protection. If left as is, weather conditions will cause the material to deteriorate rapidly. As practice shows, external processing should be carried out annually. If you do not paint a tree gazebo over time, the process of restoring it can turn into a big problem.
Selection of paint for different wood
In the private sector, construction is carried out from different sawn timber, but over time it acquires new properties. As they change, it is required to select more and more new formulations that are best suited to specific conditions.
The owner of the land plot can use such developments to resolve the issue of the selection of paint in order to paint a wooden gazebo of a particular age with high quality:
- New tree. To emphasize the beauty and texture of the material, it is better to use a stain and clear varnish with protective properties.
- With remnants of old paint. It is too long and difficult to clean it, it is easier to apply a new solution on top, corresponding in composition to the previous one, so that the coating does not swell and flake.
- Unedged boards and old wood. There is nothing to emphasize in such elements; rather, you need to mask. Therefore, it is better to use thick and opaque products.
In all cases, you should choose the right tool. For a certain type of coating, a brush, roller or spray gun is used.
What color is better to paint the gazebo
The color of a building is as important as its shape and size. Here you need to choose a middle ground between the correspondence of the gazebo to the landscape of the area, the surrounding buildings and your own taste.
Color options can be as follows:
- Transparent. Mixtures are completely transparent and tinted. Designed to preserve and emphasize the attractiveness of natural materials.
- Dark. If everything is covered in brown or black, it will be gloomy. However, it is sometimes impossible to hide defects in another way. Then it is worth playing in contrast by making a bright roof or floorboards.
- Light coloured. A universal solution for almost any landscape, only if the object is not standing on the sand. White, yellow and beige colors look nice and natural. Do not choose blue and green shades, as they look unnatural.
- Drawings. It is better to choose neutral images that do not linger on. If there are children in the house, you can focus on fairy-tale characters. Do not worry that the paintings may lose their relevance - in a year or two, you will have to update the cover.
When choosing a product, you need to pay attention to the fact that it is intended for outdoor use.
Priming a wooden surface before painting
To obtain sufficient durability of the coating, the wood base must be treated with a quality primer. Impregnations provide protection against fungus, insects, rot and fire. Good soil allows you to forget about restoration work for a long time.
You can choose solutions of this type:
- Acrylic. They belong to the means of deep penetration. They contain antiseptics, form a dense layer on the surface, on which similar materials perfectly fit, creating an even monophonic layer.
- Latex. An organic compound that protects the building from moisture, but provides good ventilation. Great for floors, supports and truss systems.
- Stains. Alcoholic compositions with the presence of a minimum amount of pigment of high fineness. They perform the functions of shading and disinfection. After application, any type of additional primer is required.
- Oil. Seals the surface hermetically, and the sticky layer remaining on it perfectly holds the finish coating, ensuring its durability and preventing peeling.
It is necessary to apply impregnation 2-3 times. Subsequent coating can only be done after the previous layer has dried.
Types of painting materials
In order to qualitatively paint a wooden gazebo on the street with your own hands, you should familiarize yourself with the types, properties of the mixtures on sale and their relevance to the task ahead.
- Transparent. Great idea for new and well-polished uprights, handrails and open truss systems. Colorless water-based or synthetic varnishes are used. This approach saves money, as it can be limited to the application of several layers of deep penetration primer.
- Toning. The best choice is yacht and parquet varnishes. After application and drying, the solutions form a dense, shiny layer on the surface, giving a beautiful gloss. The painted floor does not react to moisture, is resistant to abrasion and discoloration due to the addition of special additives. Such solutions are expensive, but the investment is justified by practicality and presentability.
- Opaque. Oil, pentaphthalic glyphthalic and alkyd compounds are used for finishing structures outside, when their condition becomes far from ideal. The coatings are characterized by good adhesion, water resistance and an attractive gloss. They serve for a long time, sometimes up to five years, which compensates for the considerable costs of purchasing the material.
- Acrylic. An acrylic copolymer is used as a binder. The compositions are highly durable, environmentally friendly and easy to apply. An important attractive factor is compatibility with any previously applied coating. Moreover, the solutions are quite affordable.
- Silicone. They are made on the basis of silicon or silicone resins. They have a higher water resistance while maintaining excellent vapor permeability. After drying, the surface is completely non-sticky, so that dust does not linger on it. Solutions of this type belong to the category of the highest strength, serve for years without losing external and operational characteristics.
- Silicate. The bonding element in the composition is liquid potash glass. After painting, the surface acquires water resistance and sufficient strength. They retain their gloss throughout the entire period of operation, regardless of the degree of abrasion. Not compatible with all previously applied coatings. These include silicone or acrylic solutions.
The choice of high-quality and effective coating is the key to the durability and presentability of the structure.
