DIY painting of wooden doors

Painting the interior wooden doors is a good way to update the interior of an apartment. Especially if the old door leaves are in good condition. You can get the job done in a short time. The main thing is to choose the right paint.

Choice of materials

Before starting work, it is important to choose the right paint

After deciding to paint the doors, you will have to attend to the acquisition of the materials necessary for this. The domestic market offers a large number of various paints and enamels, differing in quality and characteristics.

  • Alkyd enamel is an inexpensive material that dries for a long time. Enamels of this type are not sufficiently resistant to mechanical stress - after painting, the surface will have to be varnished.
  • Thermoenamel - protects the surface from temperature extremes. Most often used as a paint for a wooden entrance door.
  • Water-based latex paint - easy to apply and easy to clean. Available in three versions - matte, satin and glossy.
  • Acrylic enamel - does not have a pungent odor, however, to extend the service life, it is required to apply varnish to the painted surface.
  • Polyurethane paint - used for painting doors from solid wood. A distinctive feature is that cracks do not appear on the surface of the paint during deformation.
  • Nitroenamel is a reliable coating that is highly resistant to mechanical stress and has a long service life. The enamel is toxic and has a pungent, unpleasant odor, and therefore it is better to apply it on the door outdoors.
  • Stain - penetrates into the structure of the wood from which the door is made. In contrast to paints and enamels, wood stain shows the texture of the wood and changes the color of the base. It must be used in conjunction with a transparent protective varnish.
  • Slate paint is a special type of paint that allows you to draw different types of patterns with crayons on the door leaf.
The varnish protects the wood, but leaves the wood structure visible

It is possible to paint doors with varnish, which increases the resistance of the surface of the leaf to various external influences (temperature, moisture, etc.) and is able to "turn" a cheap door into a work of art. The latter largely depends on the art of the master.

Painting door leaves with enamels and paints is the most common restoration option. It is convenient and allows you to use a variety of painting techniques. An extensive range of colors and shades will allow you to paint doors to please the most demanding customers. The desired color scheme for paints and enamels can be purchased separately.

Painting methods

For the patterned technique, several shades of paint are required.

The use of various methods of applying paint and varnish coatings allows you to satisfy any, the most sophisticated requirements of the owners of the premises. Among the many methods of painting door leaves, the most commonly used are:

  • plain;
  • combined;
  • patterned and artistic;
  • textural.

Monochrome staining

The simplest door painting technique, in which only one color is used. However, a single-color door leaf can also add variety to an existing interior.

Combined painting

Applying patina over paint

This method of staining allows the use of several colors that differ sharply from each other.For example, the top of the door is painted yellow, and the bottom blue, delimiting them along the diagonal of the doorway. Another option is to contrast the box and the door leaf itself with different colors.

Pattern and art painting

To paint the doors with patterns, you need paints of different colors and shades. Patterns are best drawn using stencils - this will allow you to create ornate, complex-shaped paintings. To obtain abstract, strictly geometric patterns, masking tape is used. When painting the door leaf with artistic patterns, it is important not to overdo it and not turn the door into a "traffic light".

Textured painting will allow you to design the door leaf in the style of the existing interior, or vice versa, to contrast it. Sponges, crumpled rags, etc. are used. Other technologies can be used to show or imitate the texture of wood.

When painting door leaves, it is important to follow the appropriate technology.

Preparatory work

Remove a layer of paint from old doors and grind the surface

The easiest way is to prepare a new door for painting. As a rule, they are all covered with a primary coat of primer or paint. Therefore, it is enough to put such a door leaf on a horizontal surface, clean it from dust and start painting.

If the new canvas is not primed, you will need:

  1. Inspect surfaces for chips, dents, scratches, etc.
  2. If defects are found, remove them with sandpaper. Sometimes you may also need wood putty.
  3. Sand the cloth with fine-grained emery paper.

The old door is removed from its hinges, the existing fittings are dismantled and laid on a horizontal base. To remove old paintwork you will need:

  • industrial dryer;
  • a grinder or grinder with an appropriate attachment;
  • a set of spatulas;
  • putty for wood.
Then a primer is applied and you can start painting

Work order:

  1. A small section of the door leaf is heated with hot air, for which a hairdryer is needed.
  2. Remove old paint using an existing power tool. If it is absent, scrape off with a spatula.
  3. The cleaned surface is treated with wood putty, thereby removing the existing chips, dents and scratches.
  4. The door is sanded with fine-grained emery paper.

Having restored the surface of the door leaf, it is primed and, after complete drying, proceed directly to painting.

Painting

To paint a door leaf, a minimum set of tools is required:

  • paint roller;
  • container for paint;
  • paint brushes and brushes;
  • masking tape.
When painting with two colors, you will need masking tape.

It is recommended to pull the bristles of paint brushes and brushes with little effort. If the bristles fall out, such a tool should not be used.

Do-it-yourself painting of wooden doors can be done in three ways:

  • paint brush or brush;
  • paint roller;
  • using a spray bottle.

Painting an old door with a brush or paintbrush is the easiest way, but it does not guarantee a perfectly smooth surface. Defects occur as the tool leaves traces behind. In addition, in this way it is impossible to apply paint in a uniform thin layer, streaks remain on the door leaf.

Using a paint roller is the most acceptable way to paint a door at home. The roller allows the paint to be rolled out over the surface in an even and thin layer. In this case, the main thing is to choose the right roller.

Do not use foam rollers when painting the door leaf, since nitro enamels corrode foam rubber, the grains of which remain on the painted surface, and acrylic enamels, when interacting with foam rubber, form air bubbles that can ruin the painted surface.

It is best to paint doors with a fur roller.

A fur roller is considered the best for painting a door.

An excellent result is obtained when using a spray gun, which requires special equipment: a spray gun and a compressor. However, the spray gun can only be used outdoors or in a suitable room.

Getting started, it must be borne in mind that it is impossible to paint a wooden door with high quality in one go. It is necessary to apply two, three, and in some cases more coats of paint. Moreover, each of them should dry well. After the finishing layer of paint has completely dried, it does not hurt to apply a layer of transparent protective varnish to the surface of the wooden door.
