Attaching a wooden fence to the posts yourself

Fencing the site is one of the first stages of building a private house. For its construction, different materials are used: brick, metal profile, natural or artificial stone. Popular are wooden fences on metal posts. These materials are easy to work with, they are relatively inexpensive, and it is possible to create individual projects.

General information about wooden fences on metal supports

The combination of iron pillars and wood allows you to create a solid structure that is resistant to mechanical stress and atmospheric influences. Technical characteristics are provided by metal, and the decorative function is provided by timber or unedged boards. This design is able to withstand not only static but also dynamic loads.

To create a metal frame, round pipes, elements of a square or rectangular section are used. To protect the inside of the supports from moisture and debris, they are covered with caps. The poles can be installed directly into the ground or in a specially prepared strip foundation. In this case, the lower part of the supports is waterproofed.

Of wooden elements, not only beams and boards are used, but also pickets, strips. You can arrange them sequentially or staggered. Such a fence can have different configurations. For fastening wooden elements, staples, brackets are used.

Advantages and disadvantages of the design

The wooden fence is beautiful and does not require significant investment. It also has the following advantages:

• availability of all building and consumables;
• there is no need to use a special tool;
• the small weight of the tree allows you to carry out all the work yourself;
• no need for the construction of a reinforced foundation;
• ease of repair: a broken element just needs to be replaced;
• the possibility of individualizing the structure with the help of paint and varnish finishing materials;
• the metal frame provides reliability and durability of the entire structure.

Such a fence has disadvantages:

• the tree must be treated with antiseptic compounds, as well as substances that increase flame resistance;
• the material of natural moisture deforms when the temperature changes and under the influence of moisture;
• the metal must also be protected from rusting.

The service life of the structure is 10 years, but with proper care, the service life can be increased to 20 years.

Preparatory stage of work

To install a fence, you need to prepare not only the materials, but also the installation site. All garbage is removed from the site, the old fence is dismantled. With small differences in height, the soil is leveled. At the corners of the future fence, stakes are hammered, between which a marking cord is pulled. Determine the location of the support. The distance between them is 2-3 m. It is also necessary to provide for the presence of a wicket and a gate.

Wooden elements are pretreated with antiseptic agents that protect the material from decay, damage by insects. Fire retardants will increase the resistance of the fence to fire.The metal supports are painted to provide anti-corrosion properties.

Self-assembly of the fence

After the marking in the country house or around the residential building has been carried out, you can start installing the poles. This requires a shovel, concrete mortar, crushed stone and sand.

Installation of supports

To make a wooden fence on metal poles with your own hands, you need to follow these instructions:

1. Preparing the pits. If the fence has a small height, their depth does not exceed 50 cm. For large structures, the supports are deepened by 1 m. The diameter of the pit is 3 times the pipe section. A pillow of sand (5 cm) and crushed stone (10 cm) is placed on the bottom. Both layers are carefully compacted.
2. Concreting of pillars. This mounting option is the most reliable. To prevent shrinkage of the frame, reinforcement must be attached to the supports. The pillar is inserted into the pit, covered with a mixture of sand and crushed stone, tamped and poured with concrete mortar.

It is possible to fasten wooden elements only after the supports have completely solidified. This takes 2-3 weeks.

Installation lag

The installation of the lag depends on the chosen design. A double-sided fence is popular. Instead of staining, you can apply the method of aging wood. To do this, the boards need to be burned and then processed. There are several ways to fix lags:

1. Vertical. In this case, the boards will be attached to horizontal beams welded to the supports. They are installed end-to-end or at small intervals.
2. Horizontal. This method of installation involves the installation of diagonal beams, to which wooden elements are screwed. You can also fix the boards directly to the supports.

The staggered method of fastening the material is often used.

Fastening a wooden fence to metal joists

Self-tapping screws or perforated corners are used to fix wooden elements. When using the first method, the wall thickness of the supports is important. It should not be less than 2 mm.

The use of perforated corners is the best option. The elements are fixed to the supports by welding. For fixing, it is better to use galvanized screws or furniture bolts.

Barrage operation, maintenance rules

In order for the fence to serve for a long time, it must be properly looked after. For this, the following events are carried out:

1. Periodically treated with protective compounds. The procedure is carried out annually. Particular attention is paid to the upper part of the fence, as well as to the elements that come into contact with the ground. For additional protection, you can use visors installed around the entire perimeter of the structure.
2. Strengthen loose pillars. The installation pit is deepened and expanded, the support is leveled, it is covered with broken brick and poured with a mortar of concrete. Spacers are used to maintain the post in a given position.
3. Replaces broken wooden parts.
4. Metal elements are periodically painted. Particular attention is paid to fasteners.
5. They remove thickets of grass that contribute to tree decay.
6. Protect the area around the fence from excess moisture. You can sprinkle it with gravel.

Wooden fences on metal supports are increasingly common today. The design will protect from prying eyes and become a highlight of the exterior.
