Features of Rockwool Standard insulation

Insulation of erected and rebuilt buildings allows you to reduce the cost of heating them, create a comfortable living environment, and also extend the service life of load-bearing structures. The simplest and most affordable option is to use Rockwool Standard mineral wool. Thanks to the versatility of this unique material, it is possible to solve all the tasks.

Description of technology

Rockwool insulation is made from basalt rock

The raw materials for the production of Rockwool Standard Butts insulation products are rocks of the basalt group widespread in nature. These minerals are mined in a cheap open-cut way, which allows them to be obtained in large quantities. The cost of the material produced is low. The production process for Rockwool Standard basalt mats is as follows:

  1. After technological preparation, the raw material is loaded into special furnaces, where at a temperature of 1500 ° C it takes the form of a liquid molten mass.
  2. The resulting melt is sent to high-speed centrifuges and, under the influence of centrifugal forces, is sprayed into the finest streams.
  3. Thin and long fibers up to 5 cm long and 15 µm in diameter solidify, forming a kind of "carpet".
  4. The resulting structure is treated with binders and hydrophobic compounds.
  5. This is followed by the stage of pressing the blanks with giving the required parameters for the density of Rockwool insulation, after which the resulting mats are additionally processed at high temperatures.
  6. At the end of the production cycle, they are cut into standard blocks with further transfer for packaging.

As a result of these procedures, ready-to-use mats of a given size, consisting of the finest basalt fibers, are obtained.

In the chaotic interweaving of threads, there are a huge number of cavities filled with air. Due to this structure, the finished basalt material acquires unique thermal insulation characteristics.

Specifications

Dimensions and volume of Rockwool insulation slabs

The Rockwool company has been producing insulation material for many years, represented by a line of models designed in the form of rolls and slabs. The most popular are Light Butts, Facade and Acoustic. The main technical characteristics of Rockwool thermal insulation include:

  • thermal conductivity and density of the material;
  • fire resistance;
  • resistance to deformation;
  • vapor permeability;
  • soundproofing properties.

Rockwool Standard mineral wool has the highest thermal conductivity among the known analogs, amounting to 0.036-0.038 W / m K. The efficiency of thermal insulation of structural elements depends on this parameter. Fire resistance is one of the defining characteristics of basalt, thanks to which stone wool can withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees. When ignited, it practically does not emit smoke and does not spread fire.

The hydrophobicity and vapor permeability of the insulation determine its ability to absorb or repel moisture, as well as to let air through the fibers. In the absence of a protective vapor barrier layer, the thermal insulation properties of the material drop sharply as moisture is absorbed into it.

Waterproof products of the Light Butts brand, for example, are widely in demand in lightweight structures as a well-protected insulation layer.

Sound insulation or noise protection is achieved due to the presence of an air gap between the fibers, which absorbs sound waves well. This indicator is directly related to the density and porosity of the structure of Rockwool insulation mats. Well-known products of the Acoustic Butts brand guarantee sound absorption in the range of 43-62 dB.

Density and dimensions of slabs

Technical indicators of various options for Rockwool slabs

The density index of Rockwool insulation determines its resistance to deformation loads and durability. These qualities can be achieved due to the irregular arrangement of thin fibers, which ensures their strong plexus. This structure gives the mats special rigidity and shape stability. For this reason, Facade Butts plates are used for thermal insulation of the front of buildings. For the same reason, Flexi brand basalt mats have springy edges on one side.

In Rockwool products, the dimensions of the slabs are strictly normalized and take values from the standard range. For the Facade Butts samples, they are represented by the following set of typical values:

  • length of a standard plate - 500/600 mm;
  • its width is 1000 mm;
  • workpiece thickness - 25, 30-180 mm.

The latest size of Rockwell insulation varies depending on the specific sample of the product. One of the possible modifications for this indicator is represented by the Rockwool Standard 50 mm product.

Heat insulator advantages

Insulation Rockwool is impregnated with fire retardants, therefore it is completely fireproof

Rockwool basalt wool competes successfully with the best examples of organic insulation. Compared to them, it has the following advantages:

  • ecological purity of the raw materials themselves and the entire process of processing and manufacturing of the final product;
  • good thermal conductivity;
  • minimizing binders harmful to humans;
  • excellent sound absorbing properties;
  • waterproofness, defined as hydrophobicity;
  • the impossibility of reproduction of parasitic microflora, rodents and harmful insects.

One of the key advantages of the material is fire safety, in terms of which it surpasses the known synthetic counterparts.

The use of insulation

For wall mounting, you can choose slabs of lesser thickness

Samples of Rockwool Butts products are among the insulating materials in demand on the market, used for various purposes. Depending on the modification, the heat insulator is used to protect walls, roofs or provide the required level of sound insulation. Each of these uses deserves special consideration.

For walls

Especially often, Rockwool products are used for insulation using ventilated facade technology. This approach optimizes steam exchange and eliminates the possibility of walls getting wet. Thanks to this, you can choose a decorative facade coating at your discretion.

Membranes for walls with increased thermal conductivity are produced in two modifications:

  • regular (with a green label on the package);
  • with the addition of flame retardants to prevent accidental fires (black mark with orange stripe).

Otherwise, the characteristics of the varieties of membrane insulation practically do not differ from one another.

For roofing

For the ceiling, you need to mount plates in 2 - 3 layers, since warm air more intensively leaves through the ceiling

To insulate the roofs of houses under construction, the company's product range includes the Rockwool Roof Butts model. This series includes basalt slabs made of mineral wool insulation with increased rigidity and thermal conductivity.

For all other characteristics, they are also not inferior to traditional protective materials.

Products of the Rockwool Roof Butts brand are also intended for the arrangement of roofing thermal insulation coatings using technologies that do not involve the use of a cement screed.

For sauna

To reflect heat on the Rockwool slabs, a foil layer is glued

Rockwool manufactures products for saunas and baths.They are represented by Sauna Butts samples, which are in high demand and have a low price. Basalt wool for a bath is an effective insulation agent, which has the following advantages:

  • small specific gravity;
  • increased heat resistance;
  • good indicators of thermal conductivity.

The use of this insulator allows you to save on energy carriers - electricity and wood.

Soundproofing Rockwool

Plates can be used as sound insulation

Insulation material Rockwool Acoustic Butts is used for the following purposes:

  • for insulating frame partitions and decorative facings;
  • when finishing interfloor ceilings;
  • for the purpose of additional sound insulation of ceiling structures.

These products meet the requirements of the standards for sound absorbing materials.
