Varieties of stoves from gas cylinders and do-it-yourself options

A home-made stove from a gas cylinder was first made from scrap materials in 1918, when, due to a humanitarian catastrophe in Petrograd, the central heating ceased to function. In most buildings of the 20th century, stoves and fireplaces were exclusively decorative and aesthetic functions, they could not heat the premises. The current situation was aggravated by a shortage of firewood, so local workshops launched a large-scale production of compact and economical "burzhuikas", which are in great demand even after more than 100 years.

Varieties of stoves from a gas cylinder

Gas cylinder horizontal oven

For decades, manufacturers of cylinder furnaces have perfected their technical specifications. Today they are completely safe in their use, are still economical and are already capable of heating rooms with a large area. Such furnaces can be made independently, it is enough to prepare the source material - an already used gas cylinder.

Two types of stoves are made - horizontal and vertical. Each has its own design features. They do not differ in efficiency, they have only excellent external characteristics.

Horizontal ovens

When constructing a horizontal furnace, an opening for the firebox is made from the end side of the cylinder, then the door is mounted. Inside a horizontal potbelly stove, as a rule, grates are not installed in order to more efficiently use the internal space. Instead, holes are drilled in the lower part of approximately 5-6 rows, and a flat box is welded on the outside, where ash will accumulate. It is recommended to make such a box from sheet metal. If a metal sheet is welded on top, a functional hob may come out.

The body of the horizontal furnace is attached to a frame that has been pre-welded from a corner or steel pipes. This design is recommended to be used for heating a country house, garage, it can also be mounted in a bath.

Vertical oven

It is not recommended to fix the reinforcement grate tightly inside the oven.

First you need to prepare a used gas cylinder and install it in an upright position. The opening of the firebox is cut at a height convenient for a person. The optimal size is 30 * 20 cm. Below, a blower hole is made with dimensions of approximately 20 * 10 cm.

Such a furnace must additionally be equipped with grates. A lattice is made from reinforcing rods. It is not recommended to firmly fix it inside the stove, it is enough to put it on the corners welded to the walls. When the grates burn out, it will be enough to simply replace them.

The upper convex surface of the cylinder is cut off, and a circle made of sheet metal is welded in its place. In the future, this will allow the use of such a surface for cooking and tea. If there is a need for such a stove, a hole is made from the side of the stove for the chimney, and a short horizontal elbow is mounted. If there is no such need, a hole for the chimney is made at the place where the reducer is installed.

It is recommended to give preference to a vertical potbelly stove if the area of the room is small. To install such equipment, you do not need to take additional care of the construction of the supporting structure, so it can be moved.

DIY materials and tools

When making a stove, it is necessary to prepare a pipe that will perform the functions of a chimney

Before proceeding directly to the manufacture of a furnace from a gas cylinder, you need to draw up a drawing and prepare all the necessary materials. Required:

  • several metal corners;
  • a pipe that will serve as a chimney;
  • fittings;
  • metal (sheet thickness must be at least 3 mm).

Equipment and tools will be used:

  • drill and drills of the required size;
  • pliers, chisel, hammer;
  • grinder;
  • welding machine;
  • marker.

When creating a potbelly stove, experienced craftsmen recommend paying attention to the fact that the chimney should not pass along the shortest path. Otherwise, together with the combustion products, heat will also go away. The most preferred type of chimney is a broken pipe.

It is best to use wood and coal as fuel; in extreme cases, carpentry waste and household waste are suitable for heating. It is important to understand that burning / melting plastic and other synthetic materials releases toxic substances into the air, which can negatively affect your well-being.

Features and working principle

The process of assembling a vertical furnace from a cylinder

A stove from a cylinder made it possible to realize the principle of long-term combustion, which is based on the physicochemical phenomenon of pyrolysis - fuel smoldering against the background of oxygen deficiency and combustion of the gases emitted. With proper operation, one bookmark of firewood is enough for 4-8 hours of continuous burning.

The peculiarity of such "heaters" is that the air supply pipe with a damper at the end is in a vertical position and comes out through the top of the stove with a small gap.

The pipe has vertical mobility. Its lower end is equipped with a massive disc with gas flow guides. A chimney is welded to the upper part of the stove to its lateral surface. Firewood is loaded vertically into the stove, with the help of disks "fuel" is pressed against the grates. As the wood burns, the disc descends and air is supplied to the upper layer of the wood, which is subjected to pyrolysis.

Advantages and disadvantages

With a lack of traction, the potbelly stove begins to smoke

The prevalence of bourgeois is due to the large number of its advantages:

  • High efficiency. The generated heat does not escape into the pipe.
  • Ease of manufacture, installation and operation.
  • Cheapness. Such a "heater" can be made from materials at hand.

Despite the large number of advantages, the equipment still has disadvantages:

  • The inability to bring firewood into the firebox until the previous bookmark has completely burned out.
  • The design is not effective if you need to quickly heat a cooled room.
  • It is not possible to interrupt the combustion process.
  • If the craving decreases, the potbelly stove begins to smoke.

There is a wide variety of boilers and other heating equipment, therefore, it is not recommended to install stoves from cylinders in residential premises. They are ideal for greenhouses and non-residential areas such as garages.
