Maintaining a comfortable temperature by opening windows and ventilating rooms is not always possible and economically unreasonable. Expensive heat is spent on heating the street, and drafts cause colds. The Danfoss thermostat for a heating radiator will help to solve the problem, automatically regulating the heat transfer of the battery.
About company
Danish company Danfoss A / S is an international concern producing heating and refrigeration equipment. The company was founded in 1933 and is headquartered in Norborg (Denmark).
The assortment includes automation equipment for heat supply, ventilation and air conditioning systems in buildings. Plants produce shut-off and control valves.
Years of experience in the design and manufacture of specialized equipment allows the company to produce competitive products. According to experts, up to 30% of devices for thermal automation in Russia are supplied by Danfoss. All products comply with European quality standards.
Thermostat functions
- The radiator has strict parameters and when the temperature of the coolant changes, it will heat up more or less, regardless of the owner's desire.
- The coolant temperature is the same at the radiator inlet in all rooms of the apartment and depends only on the operation of the boiler room.
- If too hot water (steam) is supplied, the rooms will be hot, stuffy and dry.
The only way to regulate the microclimate is to install a thermostat.
Algorithm of action:
- By changing the position of the adjusting head, set the thermostat on the Danfoss battery to the required operating mode.
- At a low temperature in the room, the regulator valve is in the open position and the coolant enters the radiator without restriction - the battery is operating at full capacity, the room is warming up.
- When the required temperature is reached, the regulator gradually shuts off the coolant flow, directing part of the hot water bypassing the battery along the central riser - the battery gives off less heat, the temperature in the room decreases.
The speed and accuracy of Danfoss thermostats for radiators depends on the design of the device.
Types of structures
Any designs of Danfoss radiator thermostats are built and operate according to a similar functional diagram. There are valves with manual and automatic adjustment.
In the case of manual adjustment, the user closes or opens the supply of the coolant to the radiator as required. The method is inconvenient to use in autumn and spring, when the temperature changes significantly during the day.
The valve of the automatic device opens or closes when the room temperature changes without human intervention.
The automatic device includes:
- The body of the thermal head with a regulator and a setting scale located on it.
- Bellows filled with gas condensate liquid or gas.
- Crane-axle box that controls the operation of the valve.
- Fittings for installation on pipes supplying the coolant to the radiator.
The principle of operation is that, depending on the air temperature in the room, the gas in the bellows expands when heated or contracts when cooled. When expanding, the movable part of the thermal head moves the stem and valve, changing the size of the hole through which the coolant enters the radiator. When the gas in the bellows is cooled, the stem moves the valve to the open position - the battery heats up more.
Special liquids, paraffin, gas or gas condensate are used as a filler for the bellows. Research data from the Rhine-Westphalian Technical University show that gas-filled regulators have the best parameters in terms of speed and accuracy of reaction.
The patent for the invention of gas devices belongs to Danfoss and only this company manufactures such equipment.
Main technical characteristics
Any Danfoss battery temperature controller is guaranteed to withstand the following parameters:
- operating pressure in the system - up to 10 atm;
- test pressure - up to 16 Atm;
- the maximum temperature of the coolant is 120 degrees;
- temperature control limits - from 5 to 26 degrees.
When choosing, pay attention to the connecting dimensions of the regulator. The range of the company includes equipment for 10, 15, 20 and 25 mm.
There are housings designed for direct or angular connection, which is taken into account when purchasing. Additional fittings are purchased if necessary.
When buying devices powered by electricity, pay attention to the way the regulator is powered: from batteries, mains, or from a power supply.
Advantages and disadvantages
Installers of heating equipment note the positive qualities of Danfoss radiator thermostats:
- Energy savings of up to 50% by maintaining the room temperature required by the user. This property is especially important in private houses or in apartments equipped with individual heat metering devices.
- Fast automatic response to changes in room temperature.
- Easy installation on any standard radiator, available assortment of adapters and fittings for pipes of any size and any pipeline configuration. Installation on systems with bottom, top, angled connections in one- and two-pipe systems.
- Reliability and long service life, subject to the rules of operation.
- The presence of interlocking functions against unauthorized removal and disassembly, which is important for safety, especially to protect children from burns.
- Modern design.
- Possibility of purchasing a device with a remote temperature sensor, which can be installed at a distance of up to 5 m from the radiator. The option helps to maintain the desired level of comfort anywhere in the room.
As a disadvantage, they note the high cost - the price of the cheapest samples starts from 15 euros. Some users consider the upper limit of the adjustment of 26 degrees as a negative side, but the minimum number of people prefers this temperature.
The lineup
In 2016, the company presented a line, localized for the Russian market, with the designation RTR. The devices are adapted for operating conditions in heating plants of our country, taking into account the quality of the coolant and the parameters of the hydraulic pressure.
When buying regulators, be sure to take into account the information contained in the instructions for the Danfoss automated heating regulator.
Control valves type RTR:
- Instruments for two-pipe system with pumps - RTR-N, with increased resistance. The device includes a mounting adjustment device for hydraulic balancing of the heating system.
- RTR-G valves of increased capacity for pumping one-pipe or two-pipe gravity heating systems.
In apartments and private houses, the RTR7000 series of devices is most in demand, which includes devices:
- RTR 7090 and 7091 with built-in temperature sensor and temperature regulation from 5 ° C to 26 ° C, the 7091 series can be set to 0 ° C.
- The RTR 7092 is equipped with an external sensor * and a minimum and maximum temperature detection device (travel stop).
- RTR 7094 - tamper-proof, built-in anti-freeze sensor.
- RTR 7096 is protected by a special casing, has limited temperature regulation, the sensor in the device is remote *.
The remote sensor is connected to the device with an ultra-thin tube up to 2 m long.
Liquid filled sensors are designated RTRW.
When replacing old series RTD, RA sensors with RTR devices, use the table.

Replacement options for rarer regulators can be found in the appendix to the instructions.
Features of installation, setup and operation
If the radiator is not equipped with shut-off valves at the inlet and outlet, work is carried out only in the summer. If the battery can be removed from the general circuit, the thermostat can be installed at any time.
Installation algorithm:
- If necessary, turn off the heating, drain the water from the system.
- Marking is carried out taking into account the length of the pipes and adapters.
- If the extra section of the pipe has to be cut off, a thread is made in the remaining section, a die of the required size is used. The necessary fitting is welded into the polypropylene pipe loop.
- A sealant (flax, FUM-tape) is wound on the thread and the valve is screwed on. On the body, the arrow indicates the movement of the coolant, it must be strictly observed.
- Depending on the modification, the seal is made with rubber gaskets or the tapered part of the body. Grinding with abrasive materials of joints is prohibited.
- According to the instructions, a thermal head is put on the regulator body.
- A test run is carried out, leaks are eliminated.
The final setting of the Danfoss thermal head for radiators is carried out after hot water has been supplied to the heating system.
The manufacturer gives several important operating tips to achieve the greatest effect from the installed equipment:
- if several batteries are equipped with thermostats in the room, they must be simultaneously adjusted;
- when ventilating, the thermostat is turned off so that there is no increased heat consumption;
- in standby mode, the temperature is not reduced by more than 3 degrees compared to normal values - the saved energy will be spent on reheating the room.
Installing thermostats on heating radiators is a great way to solve the problem of saving energy resources and automatically maintain a comfortable temperature in each room of an apartment. Installation of devices is simple and does not take much time. It is important to choose the right device and follow the instructions for use - in this case, the device will serve without breakdowns for several decades.
