DIY chimney installation and installation

To equip housing with a stove, solid-fuel installation or atmospheric gas boiler, it is necessary to organize a channel for the removal of combustion products. You can lay it out of bricks, but these are large financial and labor costs, in some cases it is impossible to implement the project due to the design features of the house. In the presence of such difficulties, the chimney is fastened to the wall. The option also wins because you can do the work yourself, without involving a professional team of installers.

What is a sandwich chimney

Fastening the chimney to the wall

The element gets its name from the layered construction. There is a filling that is placed between two bases. Insulation acts as the first, metal pipes of different diameters as bases. The entire system is a complete assembly unit. By connecting a certain number of such elements, chimneys of different heights are obtained. These are basic parts, you also need fasteners for the chimney, various kinds of bends and additional devices.

Materials of construction

The three-layer structure, which forms the basis of a single pipe element, consists of the following materials:

  • Internal working casing for removal of combustion products. Most often it is made of AISI 316 stainless steel.
  • Filler for insulation.
  • External or load-bearing casing AISI 304, which serves as a frame. He is fixed to the wall.

The peculiarity of the internal chimney is the ability to withstand gases, the temperature of which reaches 900 degrees Celsius. The outer shell has good resistance to aggressive environments.

Connection types

Chimney sandwich elements

The sandwich elements are interconnected by the type of elbows - on one side of the bell there is a connecting cylindrical groove without insulation, where the end of the other chimney is inserted up to the persistent skirt. This is convenient and allows you to use only tightening clamps for tight fixation of the cylinders to each other.

The chimney is fastened to the plane of the wall due to the support clamps of various diameters and lengths of the holders. Sometimes instead of them there is one post, which at the end has the shape of a screw. This part is simply screwed into a plastic dowel inserted into the concrete.

Insulation type and wall thickness

Basalt-based cotton wool is used as a heater between the inner and outer casing in this type of construction. This is the only possible option for thermal insulation, since mineral wool is not a combustible material, therefore it can easily withstand high temperatures. The thickness of the basalt layer itself depends primarily on the diameter of the pipe. On average, this size ranges from 60 to 40 mm, and the density is 125 kilograms per cubic meter.

If we take the thickness of the walls of the stainless steel metal, then for the inner casing the standard is 1-0.5 mm, for the outer, not subject to strong heating - 0.4 mm.

Advantages and disadvantages

The gas exhaust ducts are completely smooth, so soot does not accumulate inside

The gas exhaust duct, organized on the basis of a sandwich smoke fume, has the following positive aspects:

  • High-quality insulation, minimizing the negative factors of condensation on the inner walls and icing of the channel.
  • Due to the smoothness of the walls, soot practically does not settle on them and is easily cleaned off.
  • Pipes are heat-resistant, have a long service life before burning out.
  • The frame itself can be assembled quickly and it will be cheaper than laying out a brick array.
  • It is easy to carry out maintenance, since it is possible to detach the section at any place and make an audit of the channel.

Sandwich elements have one significant drawback - with prolonged operation, there may be a deterioration in the sealing of the joints between individual components.

If we compare the price of a metal frame with the price of brickwork, the latter will cost more, but the sandwich's multilayer structure itself cannot be called cheap.

Chimney device made of sandwich elements

Chimney structural elements

A smoker based on double-walled channels can contain the following standard elements:

  • Sandwiches in various lengths. This is the main material of which the structure frame is composed.
  • Starting double-walled chimney. It is designed to connect the boiler or furnace outlet to the rest of the system.
  • Double-walled tee with insulation. Performs the function of transition from a horizontal outlet to a vertical section.
  • End condensate trap. It is installed in the lower part of the tee to remove moisture flowing down the walls of the smoker.
  • Support bracket for the chimney - holds the entire mass of the structure.
  • Elbow - this part allows you to offset the vertical direction if necessary to bypass a roof overhang or other obstacle.
  • Clamps for fixing. They crimp the joints of the sandwich elements.
  • Cap. It is worn on top to protect the channel from atmospheric precipitation.
  • Wall bracket.

All listed parts must be of the same diameter.

If the distance of the channel from the last point of its attachment to the wall to the top is more than 1.5 meters, a special clamp should be installed on this section for stretching. A structure that is not reinforced with ropes can easily fall off in heavy winds.

Bracket design features

Bracket with a clamp for fixing the chimney to the wall

The most common type of fastener is an adjustable bracket for fixing the smoker to the wall. It consists of two rods with round holes for screwing to the house and elongated grooves for the possibility of changing the position of the clamp relative to the outside of the wall.

The clamp itself consists of two parts: support and fixing. The first is fixed on the rods with screws, the second is attached to the support in the same way. The clamp is designed for a specific cylinder diameter.

Methods for attaching the chimney to the wall and the necessary tools

There are two common ways to install a chimney near a wall:

  • Fastening with a mast involves the construction of a steel structure from corners and profile fittings. This support must have a larger inner section than the outer diameter of the cylinder, since the latter is placed in the middle. The lower part of the mast is concreted into the ground, the upper part is fixed with four guy ropes.
  • Fixing to the wall at a distance involves the use of support brackets, which are directly screwed to the supporting structure, and the smoker is already fixed to them.

In the first case, you must have as tools: a welding machine, a device for cutting metal, a set of wrenches and other devices. In the version with brackets - an electric hammer drill.

How to fix a chimney pipe to the wall with your own hands

Chimney bracket installation

To build a chimney yourself from sandwich elements, you must:

  1. Drill a hole in the wall for the side outlet of the smoker.
  2. Beat off the vertical and mark the points for mounting the fasteners at least after one meter.
  3. Drill holes according to the markings and install in each chimney bracket.
  4. Assemble the smoker from the bottom up, gradually fixing each section in the clamp.

The position of the channel must be strictly vertical.

Perform these complex installation work in a safe manner. Stairs and supports must be insured while staying at a height.
