Downhole casing cover

Many owners of country houses or summer cottages equip an autonomous water supply system on their personal plot. It has many advantages, but its maintenance is quite troublesome. The arrangement of the water intake point involves the mandatory installation of a special protective device - a cover.

Why do you need a cover for a well

Well cap protects water from contamination and simplifies pumping equipment installation

The source cover or head is a protective device that prevents foreign objects from entering the well shaft from the outside. If the installation of such a structure is neglected, the life of the well or well will be reduced.

Most often, the head is used to reliably seal the mouth of the water intake point. The main purposes of its use:

  • Increase in the total debit of the water intake point.
  • Providing maximum protection, which is especially important when there are small children and pets in the house.
  • Ensuring safety during the installation of equipment.
  • Prevent sand and soil particles, leaves, dust, small insects, precipitation, etc. from entering the mine and pipe.

Despite the simplicity of its design, it performs a large number of functions that not only extend the service life of the source, but also prevent tragic events.

Types and design features of the well cover for the casing

Well caps are divided into several types depending on the material of manufacture. The following materials are used for production:

  • plastic;
  • aluminum;
  • cast iron;
  • mixtures of plastic and metal in different proportions.

It is preferable to use an aluminum cover, as the device is secured with tightening bolts. When pulled together, plastic can behave unpredictably, cast iron can also burst.

Most modern covers are equipped with special lugs, the main task of which is to secure a safety cable for a deep water pump. This is very convenient, since it simplifies maintenance during operation.

All types of covers have a special hole for entering the supply cable. In the barrel, air movement is provided due to the presence of a ventilation valve in the housing. This valve can be plugged if necessary or desired.

Protective products are universal, designed for casing pipes of different diameters, or special for certain pipe diameters: 133 mm, 127 mm, 125 mm, etc.

Each cover must be equipped with a ground connection.

The upper part of the case opens without much effort, which greatly simplifies the operation process.

Design features of well headings:

  • Heads from different manufacturers may have, albeit insignificant, differences in design.
  • Some models are equipped with terminal boxes where the cable connection is located. This design allows you to remove the pumping equipment from the well without cutting the cable if necessary. If such a device is not provided, the owner will be forced to cut off the cable.
  • The universal head, painted black on the right-hand side and made of aluminum, is often equipped with a built-in electrical unit. The terminal block switches the wires, which saves on the supply cable from the water intake point to the house.
  • The electrical unit carries out real-time diagnostics of the pump and supply line.

The tightness of the connection between the cover and the flange is ensured by an O-ring.

Installing the product

Regardless of the type of protective cover, the installation algorithm is the same everywhere. It cannot be neglected, otherwise the device will not be able to perform its tasks properly.

  1. An O-ring is required on the casing. This will allow the equipment to be tightly fixed in the future.
  2. You need to proceed directly to the installation from the bottom of the cover. It is lowered all the way until it sits firmly on the rubber seal. The ring should be tightly clamped between the cover and the casing body.
  3. The lower part of the cover is fixed with imbus bolts.
  4. The electrical wire of the water pump is routed through the cable entry hole.
  5. A protective cable fitting is screwed in, and a cable is inserted into the hole.
  6. With the help of clamps, the cable is fixed at a certain distance.
  7. The top of the lid has a special groove that aligns with the center pin.
  8. The upper part of the cover is connected to the lower part using imbus bolts.

Making a cover for a water well with your own hands

Homemade well head

The protective part can be purchased ready-made in the store or made by yourself at home. A self-made design is several times cheaper, while any diameter can be adjusted.

To make a head with your own hands, you will need the following consumables and work equipment:

  • Fastening bolts with which it will be possible to ensure a reliable connection of parts.
  • Sheets of cast iron, aluminum or steel no more than 10 mm thick (plastic can also be used).
  • Tight rubber from which the rubber seal will be cut. Fits between head cover and flange.
  • Metal cutting equipment and welding machine.

If everything you need is prepared, you can start making the head for the well. The technology is as follows:

  1. A flange is cut out of the metal. Its diameter should be slightly larger than the diameter of the casing. It is folded and welded at the junction. The result is a kind of glass, to which a part is welded, intended for the installation of fasteners.
  2. Cut out the lid. Its diameter should be the same as the diameter of the flange skirt. Thanks to this, it will be possible to ensure a reliable connection of all elements of the head.
  3. From the inside, one eyebolt is welded to the cover, which will further act as a guide cable holder.
  4. Two more eyebolts are welded on the outside. They are needed to lift the lid if necessary.
  5. The whole structure is securely fastened with bolts, you first need to lay the rubber ring between the cover and the flange.

The approximate price of a cover for a well is from 600-800 rubles. Don't underestimate the importance of the head. A simple design effectively copes with a fairly wide range of tasks.
